Clash Of The Crossovers

Teamups in Power Rangers usually consists of Power Rangers from two or more seasons teaming up to defeat an overpowered enemy.

A good team up usually comprises of character development from the older team and how well the two teams interact.

A bad team up is comprised of barely any interaction between teams and is just shown to be a twenty-minute fight scene.

In this article, I will be giving my critique on every team up in the franchise and determine whether or not it is a good team up or a bad team up.

A Friend In Need
Seasons: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers & Masked Rider
A Friend In Need for me has always been an episode that I skip when rewatching Season 3. A majority of this three-parter is just exposition of what the upcoming Masked Rider shows premise will be about and connects characters in the laziest of ways. For one, they make King Lexian, who doesn’t really look that tech-savvy, the creator of Alpha 5 and they allude to the fact that Lord Zedd and Count Dregon are mortal enemies, even though Count Dregon never mentions Lord Zedd once in this teamup or any episodes of Masked Rider. Also, after this episode, Masked Rider decided to completely wipe away the fact that they are in the Power Rangers Universe, so connecting the Power Rangers characters with the Masked Rider characters were all for nothing.

Rangers Of Two Worlds
Seasons: Power Rangers Zeo & Mighty Morphin’ Alien Rangers
While this episode is infamous among the fandom as to how they got Billy off the show, this team up has many good moments. For one, seeing both Rita & Zedd and The Machine Empire sending down monsters to attack the Earth was an interesting concept and seeing them trying to outdo one another gives me the villain feels. Also, the realization that Rita & Zedd’s most powerful monster is a pink purse is pretty hilarious.

Shell Shocked
Seasons: Power Rangers In Space & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation
While Power Rangers In Space is my favorite season, this episode to me is one of the few episodes of In Space that I despise to no end. For one, having this episode come out so early in the season really hurts Astronema’s credibility as a villain. Turning the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles evil was literally her second plan to defeat the Power Rangers. Fortunately for us, her next plan to destroy the Power Rangers with an evil team is executed a lot better. I also hated how stupid all the Space Rangers (except Andros) were this episode. Wouldn’t you think something was up if you were asked all these questions about how your base works?

True Blue To The Rescue
Seasons: Power Rangers In Space & Power Rangers Turbo
True Blue To The Rescue, while not a full team up due to the fact that 80 percent of the Turbo Ranger team became the Space Rangers, did a good job at tying up loose ends Turbo left hanging. For one, we get to see what happened to Justin after he decided to stay on Earth after the rest of the team went into space to travel to Eltar. They also show us what Divatox did with Lightning Cruiser & Storm Blaster after she captured them during her raid on the Power Chamber. Personally, for me, the best part of the episode was the little Divatox cameo at the beginning of the episode where we see one of the many instances where Divatox & Astronema show off their bitter rivalry.

Always A Chance
Season: Power Rangers In Space & Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers
While this episode does feature the return of fan-favorite, Adam Park, the execution for the appearance of Adam was a little odd. Carlos is going through a recycled plot from last season where he starts getting all down in the dumps due to him injuring one of his teammates in battle. After a tough battle with one of Astronema’s monsters, Adam comes out of nowhere to assist Carlos by boosting his confidence with a Rocky-style training montage. While I do find this reason for Adam coming into the episode to be a little weird, everything after the Carlos and Adam training montage is really good. For one, we see Adam risking his life to aid Carlos after he stupidly quits being a Power Ranger by using his broken Power Morpher to morph into the Black Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger. While some question why Adam did not use his viable Green Zeo Ranger powers, Adam using the Black Ranger powers was a good way to see what would happen to a former ranger if they chose to morph with a broken morpher.

To The Tenth Power
Seasons: Power Rangers Lost Galaxy & Power Rangers In Space
Considered to be the first annual team up, To The Tenth Power, like True Blue To The Rescue tied up a major plot point that was never completely resolved, which was whatever happened to the Psycho Ranger Key Cards that Astronema had in her possession? Deviot, through some underhanded methods, obtains the Psycho Ranger Key Cards and releases them to do Trakeena’s bidding. Their first mission was to capture all the Galaxy Rangers and succeeds in capturing four of them. When Psycho Red attempts to capture Leo, Andros comes in and assists Leo and the Galaxy Rangers in defeating the Psycho Rangers. But he isn’t the only one to come to the party. The rest of the Space Rangers make a grand entrance (by jumping off a building) and the two teams combine forces to battle in five two against one fights that are all kinds of awesome. Eventually, the two teams combine their energies together to destroy the Psycho Rangers for good. However, their victory is shown to be cut short when it is revealed that Psycho Pink has survived which inevitably brings forth events in which many consider to be one of Power Rangers shining moments.

Trakeena’s Revenge
Seasons: Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue & Power Rangers Lost Galaxy
Trakeena’s Revenge, while not as sloppy as some team-ups in later seasons, is a team-up that does a lot of things wrong. Trakeena is revealed to have survived the final battle against the Galaxy Rangers and has traveled to Earth to capture lifeforce from the citizens of Mariner Bay, so that she may regain her insect form. A little girl named Heather finds out about Trakeena’s plan and befriends Carter, the Red Lightspeed Ranger, and this is where the team up starts to mess things up. For one, the entire episode focus on the interaction between this little girl, who we are just introduced to that we will never see again over the Galaxy Rangers. This episode also does something really weird by introducing Leo by himself and then Maya and Kai a little later on and Damon and Kendrix towards the end which makes a majority of the cast having even less focus and barely any screen time. Also, I can’t forget to mention that the dumbest person in the Power Rangers Universe is introduced in this episode who thinks there is no such thing as monsters.

Time For Lightspeed
Seasons: Power Rangers Time Force & Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue
Time For Lightspeed for me has always been the team up I sometimes forget even exists. Don’t get me wrong, I love both Lightspeed Rescue & Time Force, but this team up seems a little too quick. For one, a majority of the episode focuses on Carter and Wes teaming up to prevent a resurrected Vypra from raising a Super Demon. While this episode did not focus on team interacting as much as I hoped they would, we do get scenes of what the rest of the team has been doing since they hung up their helmets including the revelation of Joel & Miss Fairweather getting married.

Reinforcements From The Future
Seasons: Power Rangers Wild Force & Power Rangers Time Force
While Wild Force is not the best season of the franchise, it does supply us with a fantastic team-up. Like many good team-ups, this one focuses on what the Time Force Rangers have been up to for the past year and also focus on the reformed villains Ransik & Nadira have been up to as well. We are also given hybrid villains for this team-up call Mut-Orgs which showcases the monster types of both seasons. It is also revealed that they are the ones responsible for making Ransik’s body into a living weapon. Last but not least, we are treated to an epic scene where Jen in leather gear jumps of a mountain and blasts the Mut-Orgs with a laser blaster. I also can’t forget to mention our first cross season ship of Taylor & Eric.

Forever Red
Season: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers To Power Rangers Wild Force
Forever Red for me has always been an episode that is highly overrated in the fandom. Yes, I know that having every Red Ranger up to that point teaming up to defeat a great evil is a big deal but beyond that, I really don’t see anything that makes this episode have all the hype it has. Also, some of the writing in this episode feels very fanfic-like which kind of makes sense since a fan of the show who eventually became the story editor of Wild Force Amit Bhaumik wrote this episode and Reinforcements From The Future.

Thunder Storm
Seasons: Power Rangers Dino Thunder & Power Rangers Ninja Storm
Thunder Storm is a team up that does everything right in my opinion. Like most good team-ups, it shows what the Wind Rangers have been up to but with a twist. Lothor comes back and tricks the Wind Rangers into using morphers that turn them evil which leads to two awesome fight scenes between the Wind & Dino Rangers. We also get to see some awesome scenes between Lothor & Mesogog and a scene at the end of the episode where Marah & Cassidy Cornell (who are played by the same actress) has a scene where they complement each other at how stunning the other one is. The one problem this team up has is the shock from the cast about the thought of evil Power Rangers. One, there are two former evil Power Rangers in your season and you just beat an evil ranger clone last episode so there’s no reason to be surprised at the sight of evil Power Rangers.

History
Seasons: Power Rangers SPD & Power Rangers Dino Thunder
History for me has felt like a team up that the crew really didn’t want to do but was forced to do. First off, the Dino Rangers are treated like shit by the SPD Rangers which should never happen when the newer team is interacting with the older team. Second, the big fight scene where the two teams team up is just a regular fight with Krybots so it really doesn’t feel like the Dino Rangers needed to assist the SPD Rangers at all. One thing that this team up does get points for is the exposition at the end about what the Dino Rangers will achieve after they hang up their helmets but the scene goes so quick that you can blink and miss it.

Wormhole
Seasons: Power Rangers SPD & Power Rangers Dino Thunder
The second of the SPD/Dino Thunder team-ups, Wormhole to me has always felt like the better of the team-ups. For one, we get to see the Dino Rangers in their own environment and we get to see the two villain factions teaming up to defeat a common enemy. We are also treated to one of the strangest moments in PR History with the two teams screaming “No One Gets Inside”. One thing this team up did wrong was the need to erase the memories of these events. I never understood why this needed to happen. Also, I find it strange that the staff decided to let Jeffrey Parazzo record ADR for a fully morphed Tommy.

Once A Ranger
Seasons: Power Rangers Operation Overdrive, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Power Rangers Ninja Storm, Power Rangers Dino Thunder, Power Rangers  SPD, & Power Rangers Mystic Force
Operation Overdrive is a season that many consider the worst season in the franchise so it’s no surprise that this team up is a complete letdown. In this team up, we are introduced to Thrax, the son of Rita Repulsa & Lord Zedd whose existence is questionable considering we are told that he has been trapped in a Space Dumpster for years. Thrax and the rest of the Overdrive Villains team up to server the Overdrive Rangers connection to the Universal Morphin’ Grid. Sentinel Knight in an attempt to prevent the Evil Alliance from getting the rest of the jewels forms a team of Veteran Rangers to replace the Overdrive Rangers. I will give this team up points for forming a team of fan-favorite Power Rangers and part of me wishes that this team would replace the Overdrive Rangers for good showing how detestable the current team at this point is. After this, the Overdrive Rangers in a fit of jealousy decides to quit for the tenth time and return to their normal lives proving once and for all that the Overdrive Rangers are the worst team the franchise has ever had. They do eventually regain their powers thanks to Alpha 6 with a weird voice chip and finally interacts with the Veteran Rangers to square off against the Evil Alliance in a rock quarry. One thing I never understood about this team up is that they have Adam & Thrax battling with each other and we are to assume that a Mighty Morphin’ Power Ranger would defeat the son of their arch nemesis but for some reason they decided that Sentinel Knight would be the one to destroy Thrax which really gets my gears grinding.

Clash Of The Red Rangers
Seasons: Power Rangers Samurai & Power Rangers RPM
Clash Of The Red Rangers feels like something the production staff came up with at the last minutes which many consider being true due to the fact that this was the last thing the cast did before they wrapped up filming. In this team up, we are introduced to Professor Cog who is shown to be the antagonist to the RPM Rangers instead of Venjix. It is also revealed that Corinth is in a different dimension for some reason. Like the title tells us, this team up only feature the Red RPM Ranger teaming up with the Samurai Rangers and does so in a half-assed way. Due to the air in his dimension being so polluted, Scott is not shown unmorphed for the entirety of this team up. To put the “clash” in Clash Of The Red Rangers, the Samurai Rangers are sent to the RPM Dimension and Scott & Jayden are shown to get into a heated rivalry which includes an overdrawn race and a fight in a quarry. Eventually, the Samurai Rangers return to their dimension to aide the two reds in defeating Professor Cog but not before Emily tells Scott that his team says hi. After a fierce battle which includes the Scott using the Shark Attack Mode, the combined team are able to defeat Professor Cog. Usually, this is when the team up concludes but to fill time, the production staff decided to combine two movies which have Scott & Antonio fixing a car for the rest of the episode while the Samurai Rangers fight on horseback to battle one of Master Xandred’s generals.

Legendary Battle
Seasons: Power Rangers Super Megaforce & Various
Legendary Battle was a team up that was hyped for years before it aired thanks to its sentai season, Gokaiger being a grandiose anniversary season with tribute episodes for various seasons and many cameos from former actors. However, Power Rangers Super Megaforce was shown to barely tribute the legacy beyond an episode where Jayden Shiba, the Red Samurai Ranger,  shows up for a minute to give the Megaforce Rangers a Power Disc and Casey Rhodes, the Red Jungle Fury Ranger, (who only showed up because he was a writer on the show) showing up to teach Emma & Jake how to harness their Animal Spirits. Legendary Battle shoehorned in various cameos of ranger actors in scenes where they acted heroic for a few seconds and gave us a scene at the end where they would appear helmetless for another ten seconds to tell the Megaforce Rangers how great they were before cutting to sentai footage we’ve already seen before in Troy’s Dreams before the Legendary Rangers teleport away via gold light.

Dimensions In Danger
Seasons: Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel & Various
Dimensions In Danger is a major improvement over the past team-ups we’ve had in the Neo Saban Era. While it takes many story beats from the critically acclaimed 25th Anniversary story, Shattered Grid, it does give it to us competently. Lord Draven, an evil monster from the Anti-Verse, wants to break the barrier between dimensions and rule them all and captures various Power Rangers in order to use their power to create a Ranger Clone Army to help with this invasion, including Tommy Oliver. Wes Collins, Gemma & Koda, the guardians of each of their dimensions asks for the assistance of the Super Ninja Steel Rangers to rescue the captured Power Rangers and stop Lord Draven from taking over the multiverse. After arriving at Lord Draven’s Castle, Tommy is revealed to have escaped and assists in the rescue by fighting his Ranger Clone with his Master Morpher, a morpher that gives him the ability to morph into all his various Ranger Forms. After a bit of Tommy wanks, we get our epic team up explosion before out 10 Veteran Rangers and Six Super Ninja Steel Rangers team up to stop Lord Draven and save the multiverse, with a little help from the Falconzord. Dimensions In Danger shows us that with a little research in lore and little fanwank here and there, Power Rangers can deliver a great anniversary team up, even if the season it’s from is a bit hit or miss.

The Poisy Show
Seasons: Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel & Power Rangers Dino Charge
At the beginning of Super Ninja Steel, it is revealed that Sledge & Crew had survived the end of Power Rangers Dino Super Charge and had been transported to the main dimensions, where they sit on the sidelines for most of it after rebuilding the Warrior Dome for Madame Odius. After she is destroyed by the Super Ninja Steel Rangers, Sledge takes advantage of this situation and commandeers the Warrior Dome for himself, and converts it into a set for Poisandra to use in order to distract her while he captures the Super Ninja Steel Ranger’s Power Stars. I’ve also gotta mention that this is also the Super Ninja Steel Ranger post-finale clip show so sprinkles of Christmas are sprinkled here and there which give us an opportunity for the Super Ninja Steel Rangers to be given a Transportal Device by Wes for potential future team-ups. However, Sledge is not far behind and succeeds in capturing five of the Power Rangers while he is transported to the Dino Charge Dimension with Preston. While all this is happening we get some funny bits with Poisy and the Super Ninja Steel Ranger for clip show fodder while Preston teams up with Koda to rescue his friends and stop Sledge once and for all with the iconic “IT’S A BOMB” gag, which supposedly kills all of them, but apparently not since Poisandra’s head has been seen on the Beast Morphers set. The Poisy Show is a great team up which makes the Dino Charge fans wish that Sledge’s Crew took over the Warrior Dome after it was blasted into space at the end of Ninja Steel and also gives us a team-up between the Sudarso Bros, something fans have wanted since Peter Sudarso was revealed to be the Blue Ninja Steel Ranger back at PMC 5.

Finders Keepers
Seasons: Power Rangers Beast Morphers & Power Rangers Dino Charge
Finders Keepers wears many hats when it comes to episodes. It’s a continuation of the previous “Captain Chaku” Arc, the beginning of the three part “Dino Team Up” Arc and is a teamup between Dino Charge & Beast Morphers. So Ryjack’s Villain are up for grabs and fortunately for us, Ryjack cleaned out Sledge’s abandoned Spaceship, cause all of Sledge’s Crew’s weapons are in the collection. First to be revived with Ryjack’s Reanimizer is Snide, who is used by the Robo Duo to capture a subservient Keeper, all while the Dino Charge Rangers arrive on the scene to help us burn some Dino Team Up footage. Speaking of that, the Dino Charge Ranger fight Snide after Scrozzle obtains the villain relics and revives Sledge, complete with a “It’s A Bomb” line drop. However, Sledge is nothing without his crew so we are treated to an awesome fight between all six Dino Charge Rangers and Sledge’s Crew, with Sledge’s Crew kicking their asses…yes…even Curio. Thankfully for them, the Beast Morphers Ranger arrive on the scene to save the day and a guilt ridden Zoey saves Keeper. After this is all done, the Dino Charge Rangers return to their dimension, leaving the Beast Morphers Rangers to fight their entire villain lineup. Finders Keepers feeds the Dino Charge stans, like me with four of the ranger actors returning to give us some awesome interactions and gives them some focus and seed sowing before the big Dino Team Up later on cause let’s be real, we all knew that was gonna be “The Jason Show”. We also get a revived Sledge’s Crew…again…though I’m the kind of person who wouldn’t care if Sledge’s Crew came back every season. This episode was a delight for me in both Dino Charge love and sowing the seeds for the big Dino Teamup.

Making Bad
Villain Factions: Sledge’s Crew & Evox’s Crew ft. Goldar
While not a teamup per se, it is a continuation of Finders Keepers and the events of this episode effects what happens in Grid.Connection. So the two villain factions want to add some new (or old)  blood to their crew so Evox orders them to figure that out while he takes a nap. Thankfully for us, Scrozzle has some episode rips with shitty ADR to look through so we’re treated villain version of Legacy Of Power, where we go through various villains throughout the years. While this is happening, Scrozzle has a Robotron stealing diamond so that the villains they do bring back is more powerful. Poisandra, the queen that she is, wants some diamonds for herself, so she goes down herself with her gay bestie, Curio to steal some diamond. Unfortunately for them (and Fury & Wrench cause footage), the Beast Morphers Rangers have set a trap for them and they bite the dust…RIP…until next season probably. Anyways, Evox wakes up from his nap and decides that Goldar is the best choice to be revived and he is as Goldar Maximus, complete with a new voice. Sledge, the shady bitch that he is, decides to shade Goldar Maximus and is destroyed for shading the iconic villain. Making Bad, for me, was the most entertaining episode of the three Dino Teamup Episodes. As a villain fan, I loved all the clips shown, though the ADR was rough and the interactions between Sledge’s Crew & Evox’s Crew was great. They gelled really well and there were some real zingers in there like when Poisandra compared her wedding to Rita & Zedd’s. I also like the creative way the show is using the Dino Teamup footage. Instead of trying to cram this footage into Grid Connection, they’re spreading it out like with the Snide find with the Dino Charge Rangers in Finders Keepers and the Beast Morphers Rangers fighting Sledge’s Crew in this episode. Also, it’s nice to see Goldar again in that amazing new form (which is explained really well) but I can fathom why Kerrigan Mahan didn’t voice him. Hasbro brought him back to voice Goldar in the video game, Battle For The Grid, but not for this…what gives?

Grid Connection
Seasons: Power Rangers Beast Morphers, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Power Rangers Dino Thunder & Power Rangers Dino Charge
